Water Softener Types and Sizes: How to Pick the Right One for Your UAE Home

Not sure which water softener to buy? For most UAE homes, a salt based softener sized to the number of bathrooms is the best choice.

A water softener takes the hard minerals out of your water before it reaches your taps. That means less scale, softer skin and appliances that last longer. A whole house water softener treats every tap and shower at once. Here is how the different types work and how to pick the right size.

What Does a Water Softener Do?

Hard water has a lot of calcium and magnesium in it. A softener removes them. It does this with ion exchange. Think of it like a swap. The softener grabs the calcium and magnesium and gives back a little sodium.

A softener has three main parts:

  • Mineral tank. It holds tiny resin beads that catch the hard minerals.
  • Brine tank. It holds salt and water.
  • Control valve. It runs the system and decides when to clean the beads.

Look for these signs:

  • White scale on taps, shower doors and kettles
  • Soap that won't lather
  • Dry skin and dull hair after a shower
  • Cloudy spots on glasses and dishes
  • A water heater or washing machine that wears out early

Many homes in the UAE have moderately hard water, so these signs are common here. Want to know how hard your water is? Book a free water test and we will check it for you.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

It works in two steps.

Step 1: Softening. Hard water flows through the resin beads. The beads hold on to calcium and magnesium. Soft water comes out and goes to your taps.

Step 2: Cleaning the beads. After a while, the beads are full. The system flushes them with salty water from the brine tank. The salty water washes the hard minerals down the drain. Then the beads are ready to work again.

This cleaning uses some water and salt. You add salt to the brine tank when it runs low.

What Types of Water Softeners Are There?

Salt Based Softener

This is the standard type. It uses ion exchange and truly removes the hard minerals. It's the best choice for most homes.

Dual Tank Softener

It has two resin tanks. While one cleans itself, the other keeps making soft water. It suits big homes and businesses that use a lot of water.

Salt Free Conditioner or Magnetic Ddevice

These don't remove hard minerals. Some claim to make scale stick less. The results are mixed. They are not the same as a real softener.

Reverse osmosis (RO)

RO removes hard minerals too. But it only treats one tap and it makes waste water. It's best for drinking water. You can use RO for drinking and a softener for the whole house.

What Size Water Softener Do You Need?

What-Size-Water-Softener-Do-You-Need

Size depends on how hard your water is and how much water you use. Here is a simple example.

  • Water hardness: 10 grains per gallon
  • People at home: 4
  • Water use: about 75 gallons per person each day, so 300 gallons a day

Now do the math:

  1. 10 grains × 300 gallons = 3,000 grains a day
  2. 3,000 × 7 days = 21,000 grains a week
  3. A softener works best at about 65% of its full power, so 21,000 ÷ 0.65 = about 32,000 grains

So this home needs a softener rated at about 32,000 grains or more.

You don't have to do this math yourself. Tell us your water test result and how many bathrooms you have. We will pick the right size for you.
